JokeCat tries to fix a page (Updated)

June 4th:

Below is an entry I just made on Wikipedia. It involves a link to my site. It is on the discussion page where I can edit, and not on the article page which gets almost all the views. What will Wikipedia do? It is a link with my domain name in it and this is bad, to place links to my stuff on WP. But Wikipedia can't seem to get a link to its 990 return on itself. So it's up to JokeCat, to save the world. The archenemy of Wikipedia, doing for it, what it should be doing itself.

It's time to Fix the dead 990 Tax Return Link

For about the last 9 months, the link on the Article page is returning an image, sometimes, instead of Wikimedia's form 990 tax return. I don't think I can upload the return for Wikimedia because I haven't learned how to do that yet. I can offer a link to it though. I found it not from Wikipedia, or the state of Florida, but from GuideStar. Wikimedia's Form 990 Tax Return YE 6/30/05 Nanabozho 16:07, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Stay tuned. I think I am on pretty firm ground here.

June 10th:
About a week later, the situation is still unresolved, so I enter on the discussion page:

Look at this file I just uploaded: Wikimedia_Form_990_063005.pdf.‎ It is supposed to be a .pdf file with their 990 return in it, but it's an image from Adobe that doesn't download well. I hunted around looking for the special instructions for a .pdf file versus and image file and found none. I Googled it and found nothing. So I think I will put the above link on the article page, to prompt some admin to go to my site, get the file, and then upload it to Wikipedia, and replace my link with yours, thus removing any reference to my sites name. Is this a good plan? Nanabozho 02:28, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

WP seems to have a problem here. I did what the last guy did I think, uploaded a .pdf file, and ended up with just some image of Adobe's logo. I see a problem here, me trying to do a simple thing, and nothing seems to guide me here. WP seems to think all files are pictures and not .pdf files. I think I'll wait a few days before moving my link the article page, thus appearing reasonable.

June 12th:
Last night I did put up the link to Wikimedia's form 990 on the article page. I've checked the page a few times since then and it's still there, and the mouseover looks like this: http://www.ihatewikipedia.com/uploads/Wikimedia_063005.pdf  Perhaps WP is asleep?

June 17th:
User:Angela deletes the link with the comment: "removing link to possibly false copy of the 990 form. if you can't link the one at a reliable source, don't link it at all. it's not a source, so not essential to this article"
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedia_Foundation&diff=139006235&oldid=138800509
So the link is now gone, but we had six days of form 990. One could retrieve the file from GuideStar for free and compare it to what I have on my site. They are the same.

June 18th:
So at this point I am trying to get this link on the page. I write on user:Angela's discussion page something like, this file is important, and could she help here? I am thinking she'll see that the link should be there. I am also working on figuring out how to upload the file to WP's site, to perhaps address user:Angela's concern about it being vandalism or something. I use the {{helpme}} approach, and end up having a discussion with an admin I guess, about whether or not the file belongs there? He does teach me that you can't upload .pdf files to WP.

June 21st:
User:Angela puts on her discussion page in a reply directed to me, words to the effect that she wants a link to Wikimedia's site that has the IRS Form 990 file on it, thus assuring it is genuine. I could perhaps say that she also gives an opinion about my domain name.

June 22nd:
I have emailed Wikimedia asking that they put on their site, this form 990. I thank user:Angela on her discussion page, and tell her I am working on becoming a reliable source.

So I'll wait for Wikimedia to get back to me. I haven't seen a lot of interest in this link beyond my own. This form 990 is the basis by which a charity is evaluated. Not by me, but by State Attorney Generals, and Watchdog organizations like GuideStar.

July 2nd

I haven't heard back from Wikimedia yet.  Here's a copy of what I sent them on June 22nd:

Hi: I have been advised by Angela Beesley to ask you if you can have a link to your YE 6/30/06 IRS form 990 on your site, so that the Wikipedia article on Wikimedia can link to it. I suppose I could say she wants a reliable copy. If you look at her usertalk: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Angela   you can get a better idea of the situation. Look for where it says, Wikimedia's 990. Thank you,

I guess I'll just have to wait to hear from them.
