Merging an article to de-emphasize it

From The Wikipedia Review: "On a related note the Cabal succeeded in deleting (actually merging) one of their most hated articles - 9/11 Scholars for Truth, and one of em (I suspect Moronty or TBatty) created a sock to do the nominating.

9/11 Scholars for Truth AfD  The Cabal are quite celebratory!  The flames from the burning books are now clearly visible from space." - WP Review

For those new to WP (Wikipedia), what happens behind the scenes, is the arguably the most interesting part of it. Click the 9/11 link above and read part of how something gets "nerfed", that is, made less important. I kind of side with the author here. Someone with not much a track record made the nomination, as near as I can make out.

9/11 is not the issue here, the process is. Excuse me if I don't understand, but did anyone argue how much traffic the article gets? Just maybe, too much effort is being put into differing opinions of what WP should be, versus what it could be, and it could be even bigger than it is.
